IT’S DRIVE TIME WITH ‘JAY’S GARAGE’

-

JAY Leno spoke to The Post about his all-thing-cars show, “Jay Leno’s Garage,” back for its third season Wednesday (9 p.m.) on CNBC. This season’s guests include Gabriel Iglesias, Wanda Sykes, Brad Garrett, Josh Duhamel, JB Smoove and Ted Koppel. Ted Koppel? Is he a car guy?

Ted had one of the first NSXs, so we wanted to get his opinion on the latest version of it. And he’s a funny guy. The NSX was the first true Japanese

supercar; it was successful, and forced Ferrari and everyone else to up their game a bit. You’ve gotten many A-list celebs to appear on the show

When I call celebrities I go, “Look, I don’t care about your cocaine bust and we’re not gonna talk about your movie. I don’t care about your divorce. I just wanna know about that ’58 Chevy you’ve got.” They come over with no publicist ... and I always keep my word because I’m not interested in their careers — I’m interested in what they think about their first car, or whatever it may be.

Does a guest have to be serious about cars?

Not really. We’re not trying to embarrass anybody. We have an episode called “The Car My Father Drove,” just regular people and celebrities telling stories about the car they went to church in every Sunday, or the car their dad would lovingly polish and they hated having to clean the whitewalls. It’s just about their experiences with cars.

Last fall you launched your own car-care line (Advanced Vehicle Care)

I did it the wrong way. The right way is a big company like 3M comes in and gives you a huge check and you hold up the product. Or you spend a couple of years developing your own stuff spending your own money, and that’s what we did. And it’s working out pretty well.
