Sanchez shrugs off Rays griper’s Derby rip
Gary Sanchez isn’t apologizing for being picked for next week’s Home Run Derby.
The Yankees catcher was called out Tuesday in a bitter rant by the Rays’ Logan Morrison for getting the nod instead of him.
“What can I say? That’s something that I have no control of,” Sanchez said through an interpreter Wednesday before the Yankees’ 7-6 loss to the Blue Jays in The Bronx. “It’s not my fault he didn’t get selected.”
Morrison, in comments to the Tampa Bay Times, pointed out he had 24 homers (which was second in the AL behind Aaron Judge’s 28 before Tuesday’s games) compared with Sanchez’s 13.
“Gary shouldn’t be there. Gary’s a great player, but he shouldn’t be in the Home Run Derby,” Morrison griped. “I remember when I had 14 home runs. That was a month-and-a-half ago.”
Sanchez, who was out for a month with a biceps injury, has 33 home runs in 105 games since being called up to the Yankees for good last year. Since that day, last Aug. 2, Morrison has 28 homers.
Sanchez admitted to initially expressing reluctance to participate in the event.
“They gave me a call, basically gave me an invitation … and I told them, ‘Well, I don’t even know if I’m making the All-Star Game, so I don’t know if I will have the opportunity to attend the derby,’ ” Sanchez said. “Now, if I make the AllStar Game, then for sure, I’ll do it. It’s an honor to participate in the event.”
Morrison is one of five players in the AL — including Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius — who can be voted into final All-Star Game roster spot.
Defending champion Giancarlo Stanton is the top seed in the derby and faces Sanchez, the No. 8 seed, in the first round. Judge is the No. 2 seed and will square off against No. 7 Justin Bour of the Marlins. No. 3 seed Cody Bellinger of the Dodgers is paired with No. 7 Charlie Blackmon of the Rockies. No. 4 Mike Moustakas of the Royals takes on No. 5 Miguel Sano of the Twins.
