UN’s Latest Jab at Israel: Bid To Erase Jewish History
THE ISSUE: UNESCO’s vote to classify a holy Jewish burial ground as a Palestinian historic site.
UNESCO is a fiasco (“Burial Site for the Truth,” Editorial, July 8).
Seeking to once again delegitimize the state of Israel, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization continues to pass resolutions that negate any Jewish connection to what are clearly Jewish holy sites.
As far as UNESCO is concerned, the cave is within the state of Palestine, thereby guaranteeing that any and all Jewish association with the site will be permanently expunged. Sheldon Hersh Lawrence
The Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron is the burial site of the first Jews: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca and Leah. That surely defines it as a Jewish site.
Centuries later, Mohammad found refuge among the Jews of Medina when he was forced out of Mecca. He learned their beliefs and stories and adopted many of them as his own. This might give Muslims a claim to the cave.
However, calling it “Palestinian” stretches all credibility.
That UNESCO sees Israel as its whipping boy is repugnant and ordinary. That the West still pretends the United Nations has value doesn’t bode well for democracy. Len Bennett Deerfield Beach, Fla.
The United Nations and its subsidiary organization have no credibility when it comes to dealing with Israel. UNESCO, improperly named, has been leading the charge.
UNESCO’s designation of Jewish religious and historical sites as Arab and Muslim should enrage not only Israel, but Christians worldwide.
The United Nations has allowed this travesty to continue. For the United States, work that is currently being done by the United Nations, if worthy, should be sponsored directly by America and not a corrupt and bigoted United Nations. Nelson Marans Manhattan UNESCO and the United Nations itself have become a farce. The votes by UNESCO have tried to obliterate history and turn the world’s past into fiction.
What bothers me more is the failure of Pope Francis and leaders of other Christian denominations to speak out against the usurpation of history. Only the archbishop of Canterbury had the courage to say something about UNESCO’s vote.
The world thinks that only Jews are affected by this malevolence. This isn’t true. Everyone is affected by hatred of Judaism and Jews. Toby Willig Jerusalem, Israel
