HBP scare for newly acquired Frazier

- By GEORGE A. KING III

MINNEAPOLIS — Todd Frazier’s first Yankees at-bat resulted in a strikeout. His second appeared to be worse when he was struck on the right arm near the wrist in the ninth inning of Wednesday’s 6-1 loss to the Twins at Target Field.

Frazier dropped the bat and shook his right arm. He was examined by trainer Steve Donohue and remained in the game.

“It grazed it,’’ Frazier said of the pitch.

Manager Joe Girardi has watched key members of his roster go down with varying degrees of injuries this season and watching the newly acquired Frazier writhe in pain couldn’t have been comfortable.

“Any time somebody gets hit you worry, especially when it is in the hand,’’ Girardi said. “He is OK. I imagine he will be a player for us [Thursday].’’

Frazier pinch hit for Ronald Torreyes in the seventh inning and finished the game at third base.

➤ Out of respect for David Robertson having a lot more big league time, Clint Frazier gave up No. 30 to Robertson, acquired from the White Sox on Tuesday with Todd Frazier and Tommy Kahnle.

Clint Frazier wore No. 77 Wednesday while playing right field. Robertson wore No. 30 in his first tour of The Bronx.

“I have been here for five minutes,’’ Clint Frazier said.

As for the double sevens, Frazier said it was simple.

“I wanted a seven in it,’’ Frazier said. “I have never worn a singledigit number.’’

A report earlier this season stated that Frazier asked the Yankees for No. 7, which is retired for

Mickey Mantle. The Yankees and Frazier denied that ever took place.

With Frazier primarily a left fielder and Aaron Judge wearing No. 99 in right field, all that’s left is for Brett

Gardner to go from No. 11 to 88 so that the outfielders are represented by the numerical numbers for their respective positions. However, Gardner isn’t buying into the program.

➤ The Yankees are 0-8-2 in their past 10 series. That is their longest stretch without a series win since Aug. 23-Sept. 30, 1991, when they went 11 series without a victory.

➤ In order to make room for Todd Frazier, Robertson and Kahnle, the Yankees optioned lefty reliever Chasen Shreve and designated Ji-Man Choi and Rob Refsnyder for assignment.
