Dems out to do one ‘better’

Democratic leaders said they will unveil a new economic battle plan Monday that will highlight job-training programs, the renegotiating of trade deals, and a $15an-hour “living wage” as they try to refocus their message.

Conceding that Democrats can blame only themselves for their defeat last November, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer on Sunday said his party will better focus its message with the 2018 midterm elections looming.

“When you lose to somebody who is only at 40 percent popularity, you look in the mirror and say, ‘What did we do wrong?’ ” said Schumer (D-NY). “And I think the Number 1 thing we did wrong was [voters] didn’t know what we stood for. They knew we didn’t like Trump, but they didn’t know what we stood for.”

The Democrats’ new slogan will be “A Better Deal: Better Jobs, Better Wages, Better Future.”

The tag line evokes President Franklin Roosevelt’s “New Deal” proposals during the Great Depression and Teddy Roosevelt’s “Square Deal.” It also plays against the House GOP caucus’ “A Better Way” conservative agenda.

Brooklyn Rep. Hakeem Jeffries said Democrats have to shout their message from the rooftops.

“Republicans talk in headlines; Democrats speak in fine print,” Jeffries told The Washington Post. “That ends this week. We’re going to make sure that we’re able to reach the American people in a clear and compelling fashion.”

But some critics complained the tag line is too similar to the slogan of a pizza company: “Better Ingredients. Better Pizza. Papa John’s.” Schumer shrugged it off. “Part of this is its usability, its repetition and its relation to both the New Deal and a better deal than Trump,” he said.
