Night on! More bargains for hotel hunters

- By LISA FICKENSCHER

Smaller and independent hotels squeezed by Airbnb and other homesharing sites are getting more aggressive about discounting — and that’s good news for vacation bargain hunters.

One company benefiting from the more aggressive pricing trend is Boxed.com, an online retailer selling discounted bulk items like paper towels and snacks that has been testing a hotel-booking service that offers room rates that are up to 45 percent cheaper than Expedia and Priceline.

On Monday, the e-tailer will unveil a marketing campaign touting its priceslashing deals, The Post has learned.

A room at the ultra-swanky Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan on July 22, for example, cost $390 via Boxed compared with Expedia’s $495 rate for the same night. The boutique Hudson Central Park hotel cost $141 on Boxed compared with $189 on Expedia. The Holiday Inn JFK set Boxed customers back by $181 compared with Expedia’s $262 rate.

“Hotels want to tap into our market because we have a lot of millennial customers,” said Boxed spokesman Ashish Prashar.

To be sure, super luxury properties like the Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental and St. Regis, which rarely — if at all — discount their rooms because they argue it ruins their pricing power, will not be on Boxed.

But smaller, independent hotels have proved to be willing to sacrifice exclusivity for revenues and a chance to crack the almighty millennial market.

“The part of the market we play in are hotels that are willing to offer deep discounts to consumers,” said Jay Hoffmann, chief executive of Rocket Travel.

Rocket’s HotelStorm site, which provides room inventory to many memberships group’s vacation services, has agreed to offer the super-discounted room rates to Boxed, the companies said.
