Youngster Frazier learning plenty from fellow rook

SEATTLE — Give Clint Frazier credit. At 22, he’s figuring it out. He is having poised at-bats. Frazier has sat back and watched how fellow rookie Aaron Judge has handled himself in tough times and in good times, and that has made all the difference. Listen to what Frazier told The Post about Judge. “He’s the new Jeter,’’ Frazier said. Frazier said that in reference to how Judge, like Derek Jeter, is a calming influence by watching how the big right fielder handles stressful situations. Batting second again, Frazier showed that in the sixth inning Sunday at Safeco Field. He struck out his first two-at bats and lined to center his third at-bat. In the past Frazier might have become a little overanxious in such a big spot. But he kept his cool with the bases loaded and the score tied 4-4 in the sixth, and dropping a double down the line in left, scoring two runs as the Yankees came away with the 6-4 victory over the Mariners, their first series win since June 9-11. When Frazier got to second base he happily pointed back to the Yankees dugout and gave the base-hit salute the Yankees have as a team. He is 4-for-11 with runners in scoring position, two doubles, a triple and a home run, good for eight RBIs. In his short time with the Yankees, Frazier has proven to be a Red Storm, hitting safely in 10 of his last 12 games and pushing Jacoby Ellsbury to the bench. Check out what Judge told The Post about Frazier. “He’s handled everything incredibly well,’’ Judge said. “You’re not seeing him breaking bats. You’re not seeing him slamming helmets. We’re seeing him going out there saying, ‘Hey, this is my job. Sometimes I’m going to get it, sometimes I’m not. I’m going to stay even keel.’ You don’t see that often, espe- cially from someone his age. I’m excited. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what we’re seeing Clint Frazier can do.’’

During the Red Sox series in Boston, Frazier took notice of how Judge handled the pressure.

“Everyone was saying the Home Run Derby messed him up,’’ Frazier said. “He got out and I saw him go out to the outfield, just laughing with the umpire. I was like, ‘ Wow, he’s not out there having the at-bats that he wants, but he is still out there having fun.’ He kept telling people he wasn’t worried, and he wasn’t. Because he knows what he is capable of.

“Baseball chooses when it is your time to struggle and it was just his time at that time. It showed me his poise. He’s our guy. Everybody wants to see him hit that 500-foot home run but he is not going to let any of that get to him.

“This is a special group of guys, it’s fun baseball right now.”

This was a team effort. Brett Gardner led off the game with a home run and Didi Gregorius hit two solo shots for the first multiple homerun game of his career.

Frazier smiled and said of his double, “I was trying to at least get a sac fly out of it and I’m just glad I got enough of it to hit it 66 mph over the third baseman’s head. That’s going to do some damage to my exit velo.

“It’s really fun to see things going our way right now. It wasn’t going our way earlier when I came up and it’s fun to see the Yankees winning a lot of games again. We won the series, that’s what we came here to do.’’

Frazier said he focuses more with men on base.

“Being a little bit younger I was just trying to hit home runs,” Frazier said. “Now I’m just trying to hit the ball hard and let it go wherever it goes. Winning is the main focus here and I love that. I feel really comfortable. I’m ready for this.’’

Frazier has shown bat speed and just as importantly, has learned to slow the game down because of Judge’s poised approach.

This could be the beginning of a beautiful baseball relationship.
