Prospect’s nutty squirrel is likely dead: city

- Linda Massarella

Prospect Park-goers can rest easy — Cujo the squirrel has probably perished, a city health official said.

The “possibly rabid’’ rodent, which attacked five people in the Brooklyn oasis between last Tuesday and Thursday, hasn’t been heard from since.

“The squirrel is likely dead,” said Sally Slavinksi, a rabies expert with the city Health Department.

Rabies is a progressive, deadly virus that dehydrates the brain, and the stage when its victims be- come demented and aggressive usually signals the end is near.

The crazed critter attacked park-goers — including a 7-yearold girl — near the entrance at Parkside and Ocean avenues.

There have been no known cases of squirrels passing rabies to humans in the United States, the department has said.

Parks Department staff and the Prospect Park Alliance are continuing to monitor the park for the squirrel and any other animals that it may have bitten and infected.
