Grow Up
Here’s a radical proposal for Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio: Quit with the juvenile finger-pointing, at least until the MTA has a plan in place to get the subways back in shape. Straphangers care a lot more about getting their commutes fixed than about who is to blame — and all the immature posturing only confirms their suspicions that both sides are at fault.
De Blasio was the latest offender, with Sunday’s subway-car press conference, then another presser Monday by his appointees to the MTA board.
Yes, this is the same mayor who just weeks ago denounced as “cheap symbolism” the proposal that he actually ride the subway. Now City Hall says he’ll be doing more of it — though there’s no word yet on whether he’ll have cops continue to clear his route of any embarrassing homeless people.
And having his MTA reps weighing in now merely reminds everyone that they
didn’t speak up all those years that this mess was brewing.
As for the supposed issue of how much the city and the state will have to fork over for repairs: Wouldn’t it be nice to have a cost estimate before going to war?
Exactly who has what theoretical obligation will matter a lot less than who has whatever cash is needed.
None of which excuses Team Cuomo for throwing their own sticks and stones: The governor is the MTA’s ultimate boss, and has eagerly taken the credit in happier times.
The simple fact is that the system needs the cooperation of both mayor and gov to function well — and well-functioning subways are what New York needs.
