Rose to sign with Cleveland

- By FRED KERBER

Well, scratch another potential mentor for Knicks rookie point guard Frank Ntilikina off the list.

Not that Derrick Rose really was on the list, but league sources confirmed he became an ex-Knick on Monday after he met with the Cavaliers, passed a physical and agreed to a one-year deal worth a reported $2.1 million.

The Cavaliers are expected to formally announce the signing of the 28-year-old former MVP as soon as Tuesday.

Rose spent one year with the Knicks after being acquired by thenpresident Phil Jackson in a trade that included sending Robin Lopez and Jerian Grant, the last point guard of the future before Ntilikina, to the Bulls.

Rose, whose love of the triangle offense was on a par with the affection PETA holds for fur wearers, averaged 18.0 points and 4.4 assists in his one year in New York where he made $21,323,250.

Rose, whose career has been devastated by injury, missed the final eight games of the season because of a torn left meniscus. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on the knee April 5. He missed 17 games overall last season.

There was one school of thought that Rose might return to the Knicks — he claimed he wanted to — but a league source said the interest might have been “overstated.”

Clevelend, which promoted assistant GM Koby Altman to GM on Monday, has been dealing with the Kyrie Irving escapade. Irving has asked for a trade and put the Knicks on his list of four desired destinations.

The Cavs are under no obligation to deal Irving, and it would be virtually impossible for the Knicks to acquire the All-Star guard without including Kristaps Porzingis in any deal, and sources have said the Knicks would be reluctant to do so.
