Cespedes starts after exiting early

- By MIKE PUMA

SAN DIEGO — Yoenis Cespedes’ legs have taken a licking, but keep on ticking.

The Mets outfielder returned to the starting lineup Wednesday, a day after he departed in the seventh inning with “fatigue” in his right quadriceps. Cespedes, who went 1-for-4 with a strikeout in the Mets’ 6-3 loss to the Padres, had legged out a triple — and rushed home on an error on the play — prompting his removal.

“That was a long run for him and his legs probably got a little tight more than anything,” manager Terry Collins said. “He feels good today.”

On the Mets’ last homestand, Cespedes — who missed six weeks earlier this season with a strained left hamstring — was removed early from a game after sliding in the outfield while unsuccessfully trying to make a catch. But Cespedes also returned for the ensuing game.

“Unless you completely rest your legs, if you have had leg issues they are going to be there,” Collins said. “I tip my hat to him. He’s worked very hard on the hydration side, to keep himself hydrated.”

Neil Walker started at third base for Triple-A Las Vegas in a rehab game, going 1for-5. Collins said Walker could see action at third base upon returning to the Mets, as early as this weekend. Asdrubal Cabrera has started at third base in recent days in a showcase for teams heading into Monday’s non-waiver trade deadline.

Robert Gsellman is expected to pitch for Double-A Binghamton on Thursday to begin a rehab assignment. Gsellman has been on the disabled list since June 28 with a strained left hamstring.

Tommy Milone pitched 1 2/3 innings in a rehab start for the Gulf Coast Mets. The journeyman has been on the DL since May 24 with a sprained left knee.
