Speak easy and carry on at new tavern

- By JENNIFER GOULD KEIL jgould@nypost.com

It’s about time the South Street Seaport got a speakeasy.

Mr. Cannon — a new cocktail destination that has concocted its name from a fictional, 19th-century drink-mixing prodigy — is opening next month in a dark little space that used to be the back of a retail store at 206 Front St.

If you have trouble finding the joint, look for a door that bears an old-style woodcut portrait of a well-tailored rat. Inside, you’ll find a low-lit, 600-square-foot tavern that seats 25 imbibers who can enjoy the creations of inhouse master mixologist Christopher Kearns. Care for a bagel with that cream cheese?

At Becky’s Bites in the East Village, you might opt instead for cookies or tarts to pair with the thick, creamy stuff.

The 300-square-foot shop at 122 E. 7th St. does sell bagels, but is really more of a dessert shop, hawking cream cheese creations infused with cookies ’n’ cream, peanut butter and chocolate-covered strawberries. WE HEAR ... that p.r. maven Susan Magrino — fresh off her party- of-the-summer at the Rainbow Room’s Bar SixtyFive with sister Allyn to celebrate her firm’s 25th anniversary — was spotted with her media-mogul hubby James Dunning at Chefs & Champagne, the James Beard Foundation’s annual fundraiser at Wölffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack, LI. Notable chefs included host Marcus Samuelsson, Alex Guarnaschelli and Michael Jenkins.
