Prez's vicious vacay vitriol

‘Character’ attack on senator & Times

- By MARK MOORE and YARON STEINBUCH

President Trump unleashed an epic tweetstorm on Monday during a working vacation at his New Jersey golf resort, blasting the media for “Fake News,” boasting that his base is “getting stronger” and calling a Democratic senator a “phony Vietnam con artist.”

The first of 13 Twitter posts slammed The New York Times apparently for reporting that a number of Republicans — including Vice Presidentent Mike Pence — were preparing presidential runs in 2020 if Trump doesn’t seek a sec-ond term.

“The failing @nytimes, which has made everyy wrong predictionn about me including my big election win (apologized), is totallytotall inept!”i the president tweeted shortly before 7 a.m.

He moved on to rally his base, which he claimed “is far bigger than ever (despite some phony Fake News polling).”

The president then said that the “Fake News Russian collusion story,” a surging stock market, the bolstering of the military and the confirmation of Justice Neil Gorsuch “have driven the Trump base even closer together.”

A Quinnipiac University poll released last week suggests otherwise.

The survey shows that 61 percent of Americans disapprove of the job he’s doing — up from 55 percent in June.

And while he still enjoys high approval ratings from Republicans at 76 percent, that number has slipped from 81 percent in January.

About 9 minutes later, Trump launched a broadside at the media.

“Hard to believe that with 24/7 #Fake News on CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, NYTIMES & WAPO, the Trump base is getting stronger!” he posted on Twitter.

A few tweets later, he lashed out at Sen. Richard Blumenthal (DConn.), who had been on CNN minutes earlier talking about Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

“It was purposeful and relentless, and it involved propaganda and hacking into our voting machines or at least an attempt to do it and potential collusion by the Trump campaign and then obstruction of justice,” Blumenthal said.

Trump said it was “interesting” to see Blumenthal talk about the “hoax Russian collusion when he was a phony Vietnam con artist.”

The senator had claimed he served “in” Vietnam. But after it was revealed that he received military deferments, Blumenthal clarified that he served “during” the war in the Marine Corps Reserve.

The president returned to Twitter later Monday, again attacking Blumenthal and the Times.

Blumenthal responded by saying he won’t be bullied.

“Mr. President: Your bullying hasn’t worked before and it won’t work now. No one is above the law,” he tweeted.
