CHECKLIST FOR COLLEGE SUCCESS

- — Erika Prafder

Identify friendly faces

Pick three or four touchstones on campus, be it your faculty advisor, resident assistant or orientation leader. Establish and develop these relationships. Be open to newness

Break out of whatever clique or identity you had in high school. Join a club you never though you would join. Explore! Make a financial plan

Do you have money for living expenses? What will it cost to commute? Be an educated consumer when it comes to buying (new or used) or renting textbooks. Take advantage of your time now to find the best option for you. Connect online

Chances are your school has a Class of 2021 Facebook page where you can learn more about what to expect when you arrive on campus and connect with new classmates. Find support services

Many campuses offer free mentoring, tutoring, and proofreading services, all to help you with your transition. Be proactive and seek these out early on. Investigate on-campus security

Check out what your school offers. If you’re taking late-night classes, is there a blue-light system on campus or a safety escort service to walk or drive students home? In case of emergency, know which numbers to call. Explore opportunities

It’s never too early to visit the college career center. Make an appointment for early on in the semester. Looking at recruitment information can offer clues as to what majors offer the greatest opportunities and flexibility. Find out if you can job shadow, or explore the possibility of an internship. If something interests you, talk to a faculty member in that field.
