DB Thompson cut after another injury setback

Sometimes it juis not meant to be. Such was the case for Mykkele Thompson’s stay with the Giants, which ended Thursday, one day before the preseason opener.

The Giants saw Thompson, a fifth-round draft pick in 2015, as a rangy, if not very physical, safety out of Texas, possessing excellent speed. In his very first preseason game, though, Thompson tore his right Achilles tendon and missed his entire rookie year.

After surgery and rehab, Thompson returned in 2016 and made the opening-day roster. However, he injured his knee in his NFL debut, the second regularseason game, against the Saints. Again, he landed on injured reserve. Thompson, converting from safety to cornerback this summer, hurt his quad early in this year’s camp. On Thursday, he was waived/injured. Before the move was announced, Thompson took to Twitter to post “”Grateful and thankful.’’

To take his place on the roster, the Giants signed rookie linebacker Jimmy Herman out of Purdue. Herman attended the Giants’ rookie mini-camp in May. He played in eight games last season for the Boilermakers, making 28 tackles.

Coach Ben McAdoo said he will treat Friday’s game against the Steelers at MetLife Stadium much like last year’s opener versus Miami.

If so, expect minimal work for Jason Pierre-Paul and Olivier Vernon, who both played only seven snaps in the first preseason game in 2016. The starting offensive line played 17 snaps. … It will be interesting to see how much and how well defensive end Owa Odighizuwa plays. He missed the springtime work dealing with personal issues, has not granted any interviews in training camp and has not showed much thus far in practices.

Get ready for a facsimile of the real Steelers team, with coach Mike Tomlin expected to rest several starters, including quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who will not play. His backup, Landry Jones, is dealing with an abdominal injury and so rookie Josh Dobbs will start against the Giants. engineering.
