HS grid-death kin ‘beyond devastated’

The mother of a Long Island teen killed in a freak football-training accident said the family is “absolutely beyond devastated” — as sports-safety experts revealed the deadly log drill was designed for Navy SEALs.

Joshua Mileto (inset), 16, died at Sachem East HS in Farmingville Thursday morning when the log the athletes were carrying struck him on the head.

“We are absolutely beyond devastated,” his mother, Say Yida Lynn, wrote on Facebook Thursday. “We are in no way able to respond or speak to anyone at this point. Please respect our privacy at this difficult time.”

On Friday morning, she added a post related to organ donation.

“Received the phone call very early this morning for the transplant team, any and all viable options were completed my sweet sweet baby boy,” she wrote.

“You continue to be selfless and I couldn’t be more proud of you my love. Remember, Mommy loves you.”

The Sachem East junior was pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Hospital.

The Sachem East Touchdown Club launched a GoFundMe page to help raise money for the family.

The 5-foot6, 134-pound wide receiver and defensive back and a few of his teammates were carrying the log overhead under the supervision of six coaches, Suffolk County police recounted.

A former player said that carrying the 12-footlong pole was a “teambuilding” exercise.

“It’s very big. It’s like a tree, and it’s a challenge for people who weightlift,” said Sachem East grad Carlin Schledorn.

A sports-safety expert questioned the wisdom of having teens perform an exercise involving a heavy object that was devised for Navy SEALs.

“There’s so much potential for things to go wrong that I would really want people to think twice before doing something like that,” said Douglas Casa, head of the University of Connecticut’s Korey Stringer Institute, which works to improve safety for athletes.
