Give ’Em a Bronx Cheer: The Bombers Stripe Out

-

I cannot believe what I have read: The Yankees and other MLB teams will have cutesy nicknames on the backs of players’ shirts (“Yanks Change Their Stripes,” Aug. 11).

This idea must have come from the same person who decided to eliminate trash cans in the subways. It’s ridiculous.

How conceited to think that all baseball fans hang onto every word and name associated with the game.

They used to say that you can’t tell the players without a scorecard. Now I’ll need one. Bunny Abraham Manhattan

The Yankee insignia and team logo are among the most recognizable in the world. The team’s pinstripes have been worn proudly for over a century without any players’ names on their backs.

Using nicknames — All Rise, All-Starlin, Greeny and Toe — is kind of childish, Little League stuff. What’s next? Not keeping score? Augie Pazzo Cheval, Fla.

I can hardly wait until the players have sponsorships across the backs of their uniforms.

Think of the possibilities: “Chico’s Bail Bonds.” Or political endorsements: “Yankees for de Blasio.” Major League Baseball is shameless. Greg Cantiello East Rockaway

It is only for three days. It’s for a charity. Fans can get a shirt or jersey with the player’s nickname. So what? Some fans will buy them. Some won’t. Lighten up. Richard Sherman Margate, Fla.

The New York Yankees have reluctantly embraced the modern world. They’re doing away with lame pinstripes, even if only for a weekend.

Pinstripes are relics of a bygone era, along with flapper girls and the Volstead Act. They belong in the energy-efficient recycling bin of history.

The Bronx Bombers are also adding nicknames to their backs, abandoning their tradition of annoying anonymity.

Fans are crying out in despair. But before North Korea drops the big one, let’s get our priorities in order. This stuff matters. Oliver Mosier Astoria
