Phil on the outs after another missed cut

- By MARK CANNIZZARO

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Phil Mickelson has played the PGA Championship in each of the past 25 years, winning it in 2005 at Baltusrol. He entered this week’s PGA at Quail Hollow having made the cut in 23 of the 24 he has played, the only miss coming in 1995.

On Thursday, the 79 he shot in the opening round was the highest score he has posted in 95 career rounds at the PGA. On Friday, after shooting 74 to finish 11-over for the week and miss the cut, Mickelson flew home.

Mickelson now has missed the cut in the past two majors, having failed to get to the weekend at the British Open last month, and his status as a potential member of the U.S. Presidents Cup team, which takes on the international team in September at Liberty National in Jersey City, is in question.

Mickelson, who currently is No. 17 on the Presidents Cup points list (the top 10 are automatically on the team, and there are two captain’s picks), has played in the past 22 team events, which is a record. He has played in the past 11 Ryder Cups and the past 11 Presidents Cups.

None of the three Met-area club pros was able to turn the PGA Championship into a magical week. All three — Matt Dobyns from Fresh Meadow, Alex Beach from Baltusrol and Adam Rainaud from Winged Foot — missed the cut.

Omar Uresti, who won the PGA Professional Championship in June in Sunriver, Ore., was the only club pro to make the cut. He is 2-under after shooting a 1-under 70 Friday. Uresti is a former PGA Tour pro.
