Mac won’t close door on Webb as No. 2 QB

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

Does rookie Davis Webb have a shot at getting promoted into the backup quarterback role?

Short answer: probably not. He hasn’t taken practice snaps in the team periods and is almost assuredly destined to serve as the No. 3 quarterback.

Longer answer: If Geno Smith and Josh Johnson are so terrible this summer — Smith has been better than Johnson but neither has been lights-out — then perhaps the Giants would reject both of them and allow Webb to be Eli Manning’s caddie.

“I think we all have to be careful making assumptions,’’ Ben McAdoo said Thursday after practice. “Josh and Geno are competing right now for the No. 2 spot, and if that doesn’t look the way we want it to look, Davis will get a crack.’’

McAdoo added that Webb will see an increase in his workload.

A ray of sunshine in an otherwise fairly cloudy Ereck Flowers forecast: McAdoo said the thirdyear left tackle was a bright spot coming out of the preseason loss to the Steelers.

“I think he got his hands inside, had a couple nice strikes and punches,’’ McAdoo said. “I thought he was bending pretty well and I look forward to him taking a jump this week.’’

CB Eli Apple “felt his ankle a little bit,’’ according to McAdoo, and was held out of practice as a precaution. Apple said he got “kicked a little bit going against some of the receivers’’ on Tuesday. “It kind of bruised up after practice, but it’s not a big deal.’’ … WR Dwayne Harris (soreness, upper body) did not practice. … LB Mark Herzlich continues to sit out with a stinger in his neck. “He’s progressing,’’ McAdoo said. “He is not where we want him to be yet to put him back on the field, but he is working through it.’’

LB J.T. Thomas, finally off the PUP list coming off knee surgery, is participating in individual drills. Thomas took a significant pay cut, according to ESPN, reducing his salary to the veteran minimum of $775,000 from the $2.9 million base salary he was scheduled to make.

LBs B.J. Goodson (back) and Devon Kennard (soreness) returned to practice.
