Houston: Hardaway ready for pressure

- By THOMAS LIPE — Fred Kerber

Allan Houston is excited to see what Tim Hardaway Jr. can do during his first year of his big contract with the Knicks.

Houston, the Knicks’ assistant general manager and a former guard who played for the team, was at Hofstra University on Friday working with his youth program, FISLL, which stands for faith, integrity, sacrifice, leadership and legacy. The program was started by Houston as a way to facilitate character-building and basketball skills in kids.

Hardaway signed a fouryear, $71 million contract this offseason to return to the Knicks, the team that drafted him in the first round in 2013.

With the big contract, however, comes added pressure and expectations for the shooting guard. Nevertheless, Houston said he believes Hardaway is ready to handle it.

“I’m excited for [Hardaway],” Houston told The Post. “When you’re 20 years old and you’re coming into this environment, everybody has to grow and everybody has to mature. He’s developed all the way around and he’s prepared himself for this. So he’s prepared for it.”

With Hardaway gearing up to enter the first year of the big contract, Houston remembered what is was like when he was preparing to start playing under his six-year, $100 million guaranteed contract.

“The mindset I took is: you come in, you put your work in, you treat your whole being, your whole life, like you want to make the most out of it,” Houston said. “You want to be valuable, not in terms of money, but you want to be valuable to your family, your community, to the franchise. That’s where [Hardaway’s] mindset is.”

The Knicks have signed three non-drafted players from their summer league roster — 6-foot-8 Wisconsin forward Nigel Hayes, 6-7 Pitt forward Jamel Artis and 6-4 Florida State point guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes — for training camp. Hayes received a partial guarantee while Artis and RathanMayes are non-guaranteed.
