WR King not worried about role

- By BRETT CYRGALIS

Tavarres King is not looking at the depth chart.

“That’s not my job,” the Giants’ fourth wide receiver said after Friday’s practice. “I don’t look at it. It’s not my job to look at it. My job is to compete and play and that’s what I do.”

The Giants added a couple of pieces to their anemic offense from last season, including veteran wideout Brandon Marshall and rookie tight end Evan Engram, drafted in the first round. In addition to Odell Beckham Jr. on the outside and Sterling Shepard in the slot, there are several good options for Eli Manning to throw to — and King is hoping he can sneak in there and make plays when most of the attention is elsewhere.

“Any time you’ve got a guy like [Beckham] on one side who attracts so much attention, then you bring in a guy like [Marshall], who is going to attract some attention, then you have Sterling and Evan on the inside, there’s going to be so much attention everywhere, someone is going to have to be open,” King said.

King, 27, played in seven games for the Giants last season, making two catches for 50 yards. He said his speed is his biggest asset, and after recovering from a slight ankle injury last week, he hopes he can put it to good use.

“Everybody has a job, everybody has a role,” King said. “Know your role, relish your role, do what’s asked of you in your role, and sometimes you have to do more and go above and beyond your role.”

Engram is going to play in his second preseason game on Monday night in Cleveland and he remains excited.

“It’s still going to be kind of nerve-racking and exciting,” he said, having played in the opener last week against the Steelers. “I’m really pumped about it. It was a really cool feeling out there, getting out there and having your uniform on and being out there warming up. It kind of really hit me in that moment, and I don’t think it’s ever going to go away.”

Linebacker Keenan Robinson left practice early and went through the concussion protocol. Robinson also suffered a concussion on Aug. 2, but had been cleared to return to practice earlier this week.
