Blas’ tax-the-rich idea DOA: gov
Mayor de Blasio’s proposal to tax the rich to fund mass transit is “dead on arrival,” according to Gov. Cuomo, who added that his own plan for congestion pricing in New York City is “feasible.”
“The millionaires’ tax, I do not believe is politically viable,” Cuomo told reporters in Rochester on Tuesday.
“It has been tried . . . and it’s failed several times before.”
The governor’s comments were a pushback against the mayor, his frequent adversary, who has been promoting a tax-the-rich scheme and downplaying the chances of congestion pricing making it through the state Legislature.
But Cuomo said it’s the mayor’s plan that’s going nowhere.
“I think that’s been declared dead on arrival,” the governor said. “Congestion pricing . . . I think it’s feasible.”
Cuomo said he’s working with legislative leaders to come up with a plan.
“I think all the informed professionals will say Manhattan is perfectly suited for a congestion-pricing model,” the governor said.
Austin Finan, a mayoral spokesman, insisted de Blasio’s plan makes sense.
“The mayor’s put forward an ac- tual plan for a fair and sustainablele source of new funding . . . We have ave yet to see any specific proposal from the governor to do the same thing,” Finan said. onley
