TRAINING DAY

- —Zach Braziller

BACK IN ACTION

The return to practice of starting running back Matt Forte, who had been out since July 31 with a Grade 1 hamstring strain. The Jets’ offense has very few weapons, and Forte is arguably the most important.

CAUGHT MY EYE

Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins looks noticeably different from the player who joined the Jets late last season. He’s more muscular, and is very active, frequently creating separation. Seferian-Jenkins is impossible to miss.

QB DERBY

Josh McCown, the expected starter Saturday against the Giants and projected winner of the quarterback competition, strangely received just three reps as Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty split most of the work, and were inconsistent. Petty did throw a pretty 35-yard touchdown pass to Chad Hansen, but he was picked off twice. Hackenberg was nearly intercepted by Dexter McDougle, but he also made several sharp throws to Robby Anderson to beat zone coverage.

MEDICAL REPORT

LB Lorenzo Mauldin (back), LB Darron Lee (illness), TE Jordan Leggett (foot), DL Anthony Johnson (stinger) and CB Maurice Claiborne (shoulder) didn’t practice. Tight end Jason Vander Laan (undisclosed) left with an apparent injury in the middle of practice, and didn’t return.
