WRs day-to-day after injuries

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

An MRI exam of Odell Beckham Jr.’s ankle on Tuesday confirmed he has no more than a sprain, although the severity of the injury has not been revealed.

“Odell has an ankle [sprain] and we’ll see how he responds to treatment,’’ Ben McAdoo said Tuesday.

McAdoo would not specify if it is a low (less serious) or high (far more serious) ankle sprain, but it appears this is a low left ankle sprain, given that Beckham said he “rolled’’ the ankle and McAdoo said, “We’ll take it day by day and see how they respond to treatment,’’ when asked about Beckham and receiver Brandon Marshall, who, like Beckham, was forced out of Monday night’s 10-6 preseason loss in Cleveland. Marshall is dealing with a shoulder issue.

On the second play of the second quarter, Beckham leaped to catch an Eli Manning pass for an 18-yard gain. He was undercut by defensive back Briean Boddy-Calhoun, with the defender’s right shoulder making direct contact with Beckham’s left knee — a low blow that angered several Giants players.

That the hit came on grass, and not turf, is likely a reason why Beckham escaped a far more costly fate.

“When I first looked up at the screen I thought it was really bad,’’ safety Nat Berhe said. “Thank God it’s nothing serious.’’

An X-ray of Marshall’s shoulder came back negative. He described himself as “sore’’ as he walked out of the visitor’s locker room at FirstEnergy Stadium.

The Giants face the Jets Saturday night, and though McAdoo has yet to rule Beckham out, the coach is likely to sit his star receiver.

“I know what Odell brings to the table,’’ McAdoo said. “He’s a tremendous player, one of the best in the league, tremendous competitor, but if you have a chance to get everyone out there playing together you do it. If you don’t, you don’t, that’s a medical decision.’’

In the battle for the backup quarterback job, Geno Smith got 29 snaps and Josh Johnson just six.

“We wanted to keep it fairly even but … the way the game worked itself out there at the end of the first half, the beginning of the second half, that’s just the way it went,’’ McAdoo said. “We’re gonna continue to evaluate it, we don’t have a timetable on it.’’ Smith went 11-of-17 for 79 yards and a costly interception. Johnson was 2-of-4 for six yards.

WR Tavarres King came out of the game having re-injured his sprained ankle. … CB Michael Hunter is in the concussion protocol.

Reserve OL Michael Bowie did not make the trip to Cleveland after the Giants learned he is charged with domestic assault and battery in Oklahoma after an alleged incident involving his girlfriend.

“The other side of the building is still working through the details of it, still trying to get as much information as they can,’’ McAdoo said of Bowie’s status with the team.
