Backup center gets shot as new guard

- By FRED KERBER and PAUL SCHWARTZ

Brett Jones is the Giants’ backup center by profession. But on Wednesday, he was given practice reps at right guard with the starting offense.

Considering how the Giants’ offensive line has struggled this summer, especially in running the ball, the coaches are looking at all options. Jones was working in place of incumbent starter John Jerry. It could be a oneshot deal. It could be a sign of things to come.

“Brett does some good things for us. He is a tremendous communicator, whether he is at center or guard. He knows the scheme, knows the system, helps communicate to the players around him,” said head coach Ben Mc Adoo, wh o added “we are spreading the opportunities around” when asked about the position shift for Jones. “He is a physical player. He plays with good pad level and we trust Brett.”

Jones, a former Canadian Football League star, said he will play center, guard, whatever. He just wants to be out there. Although he did say it was “fun” going against Damon “Snacks” Harrison, which raised some eyebrows.

“I’m always working to get better each and every day,” Jones said. “You want to get in there as much as possible and I’m ready to play wherever and whenever that chance is. I just want to go in and make the most of it. … There’s good things and there’s things you want to work on. I don’t get too high on the highs and I don’t get too low on the lows.”

Now about it being “fun” facing Snacks …

“He’s the guy that gets you better so you want to go in there and get those snaps and test yourself,” Jones said. “So definitely it’s fun and it’s challenging.”

The Giants waived offensive lineman Michael Bowie after learning of an alleged incident involving Bowie and his girlfriend. Last week, a warrant was issued for Bowie’s arrest in Oklahoma, after he was charged with domestic assault and battery.

Last year, the Giants were criticized for keeping Josh

Brown, despite the kicker’s history of domestic abuse towards his ex-wife. Brown was cut Oct. 25, 2016.

Bowie, who turned himself in to authorities Monday, did not make the trip to Cleveland for that night’s preseason game.

“We have waived Michael Bowie,” general manager Jer

ry Reese said. “As we have already stated, we were made aware of this situation on Saturday. The league has started to gather more information. That process will continue. The outcome of that process will determine whether there is another opportunity here for Michael.”

Bowie, 25, was a long shot to make the roster. In other moves, t he Giants waived offensive lineman C orin Brooks and waived/ injured receivers Darius Powe and Andrew Turzil li, both with hamstring injuries. The Giants signed receivers Marquis Bundy and C.J. Germany and offensive linemen Richard Levy and Matt Rotheram.

The Giants received a roster exemption for CB Valen

tino Blake, who was placed on the exempt/left squad list. Blake was not on the field for Wednesday’s practice and all McAdoo said about the absence was, “We had a couple of guys we had to leave inside today, and we’ll leave it at that.” Blake, 27, had a good chance to make the final roster as the No. 4 cornerback.
