Amazin’s proceed cautiously with Syndergaard

- By GREG JOYCE

Noah Syndergaard, trying to ensure that he pitched again this season, was scheduled to throw live batting practice Wednesday at Citi Field. That did not happen. The Mets right-hander, out since April with a partially torn lat, will have to wait at least another day to take the next step in his rehab process. “We decided we’re going to err on the side of caution and give him some extra time,” manager Terry Collins said. “I think we’re kind of pushing it maybe a little fast, want- ing to get him back. So we’re just going to delay it a day or so.”

On Aug. 15, Syndergaard threw 20 pitches for the first time since the injury and said afterward, “This is the best I have ever felt.”

But with Syndergaard slated to throw to hitters Wednesday, the Mets’ braintrust got together to talk it over and the trainers said they wanted to take an extra day with him. According to Collins, there were no physical setbacks that caused the change of plans. After not playing in a regular-season game in 452 days,

David Wright was ready to play twice in two days on a rehab assignment. Only the rain, not a physical issue, could keep him from doing so.

The Mets’ third baseman was scheduled to DH for Single-A St. Lucie Wednesday for the second night in a row, but the game was rained out in Port Charlotte, Fla. Wright was in the lineup and batting third as he rehabs a right shoulder impingement. Wright went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in his first action Tuesday.

“He was excited to be back in the lineup [Tuesday] night, obviously a little rusty, but he’s fired up for [Wednesday],” Collins said. “[He’s] going to take [Thursday] and then resume the defensive side and hopefully here in the near future, we get him on the field on the defensive side, too. That’ll be a good day.”

Reliever Jeurys Familia posted another scoreless inning Wednesday with the Brooklyn Cyclones in the second of backto-back rehab appearances. He allowed one hit and struck out one, throwing 11 of his 13 pitches for strikes. That came after he tossed a perfect frame Tuesday.

If he checks out fine Thursday, he could be activated off the disabled list to join the Mets this weekend in Washington.
