Coach tight-lipped about preseason finale playing time

- By GREG JOYCE gjoyce@nypost.com

Todd Bowles cares not for the notion that starters sit in the NFL’s preseason finale — at least not publicly.

As the Jets prepare for their fourth preseason game Thursday against the Eagles at MetLife Stadium, Bowles isn’t ruling out anybody from seeing the field.

“Football is football. It doesn’t matter who we play, everybody is available to play,” the coach said Tuesday morning on a conference call. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s the quarterback, the punter or the snapper. I’ll play them as I see f it. [If ] we need to do some things, we’ll work on them. If I decide to play or not to play them, it’ll be my decision.”

That includes quarterback Josh McCown, whom Bowles named the Week 1 starter on Monday. The veteran has played just one series in the preseason — nine snaps in the opener against the Titans, going 3-for-4 for 72 yards and a touchdown. Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty got longer looks.

Asked specifically about McCown playing Thursday, Bowles declined to share his plans.

“I told everybody that needs to be available to play against Philly [that they] will be able to play,” Bowles said.

Hackenberg drew the start each of the past two weeks and in three preseason games has completed 32-of-52 passes for 267 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while getting sacked six times.

Petty — who has gone 32-for48 with three touchdowns, one interception and two sacks — came on strong Saturday against the Giants before exiting with a knee injury — a Grade 1 MCL sprain, a source told The Post.

The Jets held a closed practice Tuesday. Asked what Petty was able to do or whether he was a full participant, Bowles twice responded, “He had practice.”

Still, the coach opened the door for Petty being available Thursday.

“I feel optimistic about him,” Bowles said.

If Petty can’t suit u p, McCown and Hackenberg are the only other quarterbacks on the roster, which could further complicate the rotation against the Eagles.

In each of the past two years, Bowles has not played his starting quarterback in the fourth preseason game — a contest typically reserved for rookies and other players on the bubble for final roster spots. Matt Barkley started under center in the 2015 finale and Petty did so in 2016.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Week 1 starter both seasons, never saw the field. He had, however, played more than one series in each of those preseasons.

Bowles insisted his approach to this year’s preseason finale had not changed from his first two years on the job.

“We have certain things we want to work on and get done on both sides of the ball that I want to see,” he said. “We’re going to work on those things this week in this game.”

Pressed on the potential riskreward of McCown playing Thursday, Bowles pulled a Bill Belichick and remained defiant that he had the team’s best interest in mind, not just one player.

“I don’t think of anything as far as Josh playing,” Bowles said. “I think of it as a team standpoint. If a team needs to work on something, you work on it. It doesn’t matter whether it’s Thursday, whether it’s next week, whether it’s two weeks from now. It doesn’t matter.

“[If ] we need to work on stuff, we’ll work on it.”
