Frazier getting nod at third over Headley

- By GEORGE A. KING III

Joe Girardi is aware of Todd Frazier’s overall batting average and what the third baseman has hit since coming to the Yankees from the White Sox on July 18.

However, the manager is sticking with the right-handed hitting third baseman now that Greg Bird has returned from the disabled list and moved Chase Headley off first base.

“When you look at Frazier he plays a very good third base and he is still a guy with 21 homers and 60 RBIs [combined],’’ Girardi said before Tuesday’s game against Cleveland was rained out. “There is production. Maybe the average isn’t as high but there is still production.’’

Five of those homers and 16 of the RBIs have come in 37 games as a Yankee in which Frazier is batting .214 (25-for-117). Overall, Frazier is hitting .209 in 118 games.

“Basically the game comes down to RBIs and runs and how you produce. He is going to play mostly there,’’ Girardi said of Frazier.

As for Headley, whose regular position is third base (81 starts this year), he will move around.

“Head is going to play [third] some. He is going to play some first and he is probably going to DH some,’’ Girardi said of the switch-hitting Headley, who shook off a horrible May and is hitting .272 with nine homers and 52 RBIs. “I told Chase, ‘You just have to be prepared to play all three positions. Basically, that is what I need from you.’ ’’

According to Girardi, MLB hasn’t scheduled the appeal hearings for Gary Sanchez and Austin Romine, who were suspended for four and two games, respec- tively, for their part in the YankeesTigers brawl last week.

Sent to Triple-A Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre on Aug. 19 as part of a plan to manage his innings, Jordan Montgomery will start the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Indians at Yankee Stadium.

“He threw the ball well, it was just short,’’ Girardi said of the lefthander who went three innings for SWB on Thursday, six days after starting against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. “There won’t be a whole lot of restrictions on him.’’

In 23 big-league starts the lefthander is 7-6 with a 4.00 ERA. He held the Indians to one run and three hits in five innings on Aug. 5 in Cleveland in a 2-1 Yankees win.

Lefty Justus Sheffield and outfielder Estevan Florial were among six Yankees prospects assigned to Scottsdale in the Arizona Fall League. Also joining them will be infielders Thairo Estrada, Chris Gittens and Kyle Holder as well as right-hander Dillon Tate.
