Bombers’ OF problems run deeper than Judge

Aaron Judge has been the poster child for the Yankees’ offensive struggles, but he hardly has been the only inept bat in the lineup.

Aaron Judge’s mental break ends Wednesday. Now the Yankees hope its purpose — snapping Judge out of his massive slump — is the end result.

Manager Joe Girardi said Judge “absolutely” will play in one of the two games in Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Indians after Tuesday night’s contest was rained out.

“Sometimes you hope it refreshes a guy,” Girardi said. “They can sit back and relax and take a little bit off their plate and they can get going again. It’s worked a lot of times for a lot of guys. I can’t exactly tell you what is going to happen. Physically I think he is going to feel a lot fresher than he probably [was].’’

Judge has been seen with ice wrapped around his left shoulder recently, but Girardi said Judge told him he feels fine.

“I think it’s mechanically he is off and we are doing everything we can to get him back on track,” the manager said. “So that is what we are dealing with.’’

It’s been a roller-coaster season for the hulking outfielder. He posted a 1.139 OPS before the All-Star Game and won the Home Run Derby with an epic display of power, but has been inept at the plate since. He has posted a .692 OPS since the showcase with 65 strikeouts in 182 plate appearances, and only seven home runs after bashing 30 in the season’s first half. He struck out five times in the last two games, and has posted a .186/.346/.337 slash line with a .683 OPS in August.

Chase Headley said many Yankees have talked to Judge, and he has handled the massive slump well.

“It’s baseball. You’re going to go through some really tough stretches,” Headley said. “If you looked at his numbers right now and asked somebody before the season started if you would take 37 [homers, 82 RBIs], would you be happy? Sure you would. It’s just part of the game. It’s tough when it happens, and hopefully these couple of days will help [him] to get started. But I think he’s handled it the best that you could ask for.”

Headley said when he has been given time off in the past it has been a positive for him, even though he would prefer to be on the field trying to snap out of the funk.

“When you sit back and realize there’s 160 other games, it’s really not that big a deal,” Headley said. “Try to use it to your advantage.”
