Cuo joins fight against Monserrate ate
Assemblyman Francisco Moya has brought out the big gun — Gov. Cuomo — in his heated City Council race against ex-con Hiram Monserrate.
Cuomo endorsed Moya as a “proven leader for Central Queens” on Thursday while saying the criminal actions of Monserrate (right) “have disqualified him from public service.”
“From partnering with me to pass a $15 minimum wage, stronger rent laws and immigrant protections, as well as the Women’s Equality Act and critically im- portant criminal justice reforms, Assemblyman Moya has worked to move New York forward,” Cuomo said in a statement released by the Moya campaign.
“Contrasted with Hiram Monserrate’s shameful record of domestic violence and abusing the public trust, the choice could not be more clear.”
The Sept. 12 council primary has become a test of the Queens Democratic Party, which backs Moya, and of voters’ willingness to forgive Monserrate.
The district of Rep. Joe Crowley, the Queens Democratic Party chair, over-overlaps with that of the contestedsted coun-council seat covering Corona, Elmhurst, East Elmhurst and Jackson Heights.
“How can Moya lose in Crowley’s back yard? It would be a big embar-embarrassment to the Queens Democratic Party,” said one Democraticic insider.
Monserrate was expelleded from the state Senate after being convictedonvicted of misdemeanor assault. He later served two years in prisonn for fraud.
