FOX dumps Rose amid allegation
Pete Rose doesn’t even have FOX Sports behind him anymore.
The controversial former MLB star has not been asked back to the network for its postseason coverage this fall, according to the Hollywood Reporter, after a woman accused him last month of having sex with her when she was a minor.
At the time the allegation came to light, FOX Sports said Rose’s next TV appearance was up in the air, but the network that has let a handful of employees go over sexual harassment claims — including FOX Sports president Jamie Horowitz — has done the same with Rose.
Rose, MLB’s all-time hits leader who agreed to a lifetime ban from the sport in 1989 over his illegal betting habits, re-entered the public spotlight Aug. 2, when the recent controversy caused the Phillies to cancel a ceremony honoring the 76year-old. The woman said in an August court filing that Rose began a sexual relationship with her in 1973, when she was 14 or 15, and it lasted several years. The age of consent in Ohio, where Rose lived while playing for the Reds at the time, is 16.
The three-time World Series champion admitted to having sex with the woman but said in court documents he believed she was 16 during their relationship. In 1973, Rose turned 32 in April and was married with two children.
Rose’s firing is the latest in a string of layoffs and million-dollar settlements at 21st Century Fox over sexual harassment allegations. Horowitz was fired July 3 after an investigation into female colleagues’ claims of sexual misconduct.
Rose was tabbed by FOX Sports in March to resume his role as an MLB studio analyst during the postseason. Last year, he sat in the booth alongside Frank Thomas and Alex Rodriguez.
