Wolverines surge past Gators

Quinn Nordin became the first Michigan kicker to make two 50-yard field goals in the same game, one of them in a go-ahead spurt after halftime, and the Wolverines beat the Gators, 33-17, in Arlington, Texas.

The Gators had won 27 consecutiv­e openers, the nation’s longest such streak, since a home loss to Mississipp­i in 1989.

Maryland 51, Texas 41

In Austin, Texas, Tyrrell Pigrome threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score before leaving with an injury and Mary- land spoiled Texas coach Tom Herman’s debut.

Louisville 35, Purdue 28

Lamar Jackson threw two touchdown passes and had 485 total yards, helping Louisville escape Purdue in Indianapol­is. Notre Dame 49, Temple 16

In South Bend, Ind., Brandon Wimbush, a junior making his first career start, threw for two touchdowns and ran for 106 yards and another touchdown to lead Notre Dame to a season-opening victory over Temple.

Wimbush threw touchdown passes to Equanimeou­s St. Brown and Nic Weisher and completed 17of-30 passes for 184 yards with one intercepti­on.

Clemson 56, Kent St. 3

In Clemson, S.C., Kelly Bryant passed for 236 yards and a touchdown and ran for 77 more yards in his first game as starting quarterbac­k and the No. 5 Tigers beat Kent State.

Penn St. 52, Akron 0

In State College, Pa., Saquon Barkley racked up 226 total yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 6 Penn State to a win over Akron in the season opener.

Oklahoma 56, UTEP 7

In Norman, Okla., Baker Mayfield passed for 329 yards and three touchdowns in one half of action to help No. 7 Oklahoma roll past UTEP. Mayfield completed 19-of-20 passes overall, including 16 straight to start the game.

S. Florida 31, Stony Brook 17

In Tampa, Quinton Flowers threw for 186 yards and a pair of second-half touchdowns to help No. 19 South Florida (2-0) shrug off a slow start in a victory over Stony Brook. The Seawolves led 10-7 at halftime.
