Jets’ QB targets struggle
Even the Jets’ potential quarterbacks of the future are having a tough time of it.
Sam Darnold passed for 289 yards and rushed for a score for USC, but failed to throw a touchdown pass as the No. 4 Trojans’ rallied from a second-half deficit for a 49-31 victory over Western Michigan on Saturday in Los Angles. He also threw two interceptions.
USC won its 10th consecutive game despite major trouble from the defending MAC cham- pion Broncos on a brutal 99-degree day at the Coliseum.
It was the first time during the streak, which included Darnold’s recordsetting performance in last season’s Rose Bowl, that he did not throe for a touchdown.
Ronald Jones II ran 37 yards for the tiebreaking touchdown with 6:57 to play. Jones rushed for 159 yards and three scores.
USC’s Jake Olson, a blind long-snapper, delivered a flawless extra-point snap with 3:13 to play in the game for the Trojans on a kick that put pro- vided the final margin.
Wyoming, Allen lose opener
An offseason filled with hype followed Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen to Iowa City.
The Hawkeyes defense brought Allen down a peg.
Allen was 23-of-40 passing for 174 yards and two picks for the Cowboys, whose tepid rushing attack left Allen without much space to work with.
Allen threw an interception deep in Iowa territory with 11:32 left in the game.
He threw another one right to lineman Brady Reiff after being blitzed with 4:36 to go.
