Monty OK with Joe’s quick hook

BALTIMORE — Jordan Montgomery wasn’t going to fib. He wanted to stay in Monday’s game and get the final out of the fifth inning.

“I wanted to get those five innings, but I get it was the first game of the series and [Chad] Green came in and did the job,’’ Montgomery said after the Yankees posted a 7-4 victory over the Orioles on Monday at Camden Yards. “I was ready to get the next out.

In 4 2/3 innings the rookie left-hander allowed three runs (two earned) and five hits. He left after throwing 67 pitches. Green came in and retired seven straight, fanning four and striking out the final three batters he faced.

Montgomery, who is 7-7 with a 4.14 ERA in 25 starts, gave up a leadoff homer to Tim Beckham in the first and a wind-blown two-run, opposite-field homer to Chris Davis in the second to put the Yankees in a 3-0 hole.

“I felt good. With Beckham, it was 3-1 and a fastball I wanted to get back in the count [with] and he put a good swing on it,’’ said Montgomery, who said he didn’t think the slider Davis hit was a bad pitch. “It was a good slider. I didn’t think he got it as good, but the ball was flying out of here.’’ ➤ On a day in which Didi Gregorius became the first Yankee shortstop in history to hit 20 homers in consecutive seasons, he didn’t have a problem with Manny Machado’s slide into second base on a force play in the first inning when he had his leg clipped.

“He was on the base and I wasn’t far off,’’ Gregorius said. “I knew he was going to clip me.’’

Manager Joe Girardi didn’t believe Machado was intent on hurting Gregorius, but is confused about the rule.

“I don’t understand the rule. I don’t think he meant to hurt anyone,” Girardi said. “I think they should go back to where it was. I think there would be less confusion. Having to step on the bag puts them in jeopardy on close plays.’’

As for reaching 20 homers, Gregorius downplayed it.

“I am not worried about home runs. If I hit them, I hit them,’’ Gregorius said.

After holding the Red Sox to one hit in 27 at-bats with runners in scoring position in the previous four games, Yankees pitchers held the Orioles hitless in five atbats with runners in scoring position Monday.

Tyler Wade joined the Yankees on Monday and first baseman/outfielder Tyler Austin will be activated Tuesday. Wade, an infielder, has some experience in the outfield. The Yankees haven’t had a true fourth outfielder on the roster since Aaron Hicks went on the disabled list Sunday with a left oblique muscle injury.

In his previous stints with the Yankees this season the left-handed hitting Wade started one game in left and one in right.
