$15M suit in HS gridder’s death
The parents of a 16year-old football player killed when a 400-pound log hit his head during a preseason drill have filed a notice of claim, the first step in suing for $15 million in damages.
Joshua Angelo Mileto and Sawida Lynn Ancharski-Mileto claim their son Joshua Mileto died due to the “negligence and carelessness” of Long Island’s Sachem Central School District and the Sachem East Touchdown Club.
The Sachem East HS junior was taking part in strength and conditioning drills in Farmingville on Aug. 10 when the 12-foot log he and other athletes were carrying struck his head.
The 5-foot-6, 134-pound student was rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Manhattan attorney Jay W. Dankner, who is representing the family, slammed the militarystyle exercises.
“The drill should never have been done,” Dankner told The Post. “Running a relay race with a log on their shoulders is like what the Navy SEALs do — and even those guys have trouble with it.”
Joshua and four teammates were carrying the log above their heads or on their shoulders when it fell, crushing his neck, the notice of claim said.
The family alleges that the young athletes had not been properly instructed and that officials failed to supervise the activity and provide Joshua with proper medical care.
The Miletos have asked for $7.5 million in compensatory damages and $7.5 million in wrongfuldeath damages.
Schools spokeswoman Deirdre Gilligan declined to comment, citing pending litigation.
The Sachem East Touchdown Club, which funded the summer football camp, did not respond to a request for comment.
