THE POST’S TOP TEN

-

1. Alabama (2-0) (Last week: 1) Maybe Nick Saban has a soft side? The Alabama coach took his foot off the gas after a predictably dominant first half rather than beat overmatched Fresno State into submission.

2. Clemson (2-0) (4) Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham had just two more completions (13) than times he was sacked (11). Yes, the Clemson defensive front is Alabama-good.

3. USC (2-0) (6) Week 1’s sluggish performance was an aberration. USC is legit. Just ask Stanford, which was outgained nearly 2-1 by the Trojans and overwhelmed on both sides of the ball.

4. Penn State (2-0) (3) Forget Saquon Barkley and Trace McSorley for a moment. The Nittany Lions defense is the story so far in State College, allowing just 14 points through two weeks.

5. Oklahoma (2-0) (NR) Baker Mayfield and the Sooners made the season’s biggest statement with an all-encompassing, 31-16 thrashing of Ohio State at The Horseshoe.

6. Florida State (0-1) (5) Hurricane Irma washed away the Seminoles game against LouisianaMonroe and next week’s contest against Miami, so true freshman James Blackman will have plenty of time to think about his debut, Sept. 23 against N.C. State.

7. Washington (2-0) (7) An intrasquad scrimmage may have been more useful than Saturday’s 63-7 shellacking of FCS foe Montana.

8. Michigan (2-0) (8) Are we sure Michigan really lost 10 defensive starters? The Wolverines defense remains elite, having produced more points (21) than it has allowed (14), along with 10 sacks, in two stifling efforts.

9. LSU (2-0) (9) Let’s see how the Tigers fare next weekend at Mississippi State before believing the hype. Wins over BYU and Chattanooga aren’t sellers.

10. Wisconsin (2-0) (10) Are they out of alarm clocks in Madison? Wisconsin has now twice started slowly against weak opponents. This troubling pattern could haunt the Badgers once Big Ten play begins.

Dropped out: Ohio State (1-1)
