Otani opts for majors

- By DAN MARTIN

Shohei Otani is reportedly ready to come to the majors.

According to reports Tuesday, the highly coveted Japanese two-way star has decided not to wait until he turns 25, when he could sign for significantly more money, and instead make himself available this offseason.

And his Japanese team, the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, are expected to post him if he requests it. Hokkaido would get $20 million from whatever major league team signs him.

Scouts who have seen the 23-year-old pitch have clocked Otani at 100 mph and he also features a nasty slider.

If he does get posted, the Yankees figure to be one of at least 12 teams that try to sign the right-hander. Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman went to see Otani pitch last month after the righthander returned from an ankle injury.

Otani’s command hasn’t been great so far, but the leftyswinging slugger has a .990 OPS in 185 plate appearances.

One NL scout told The Post this month that Otani “likes the spotlight,” which could give the Yankees an edge in signing him.

Unlike when the Yankees landed Masahiro Tanaka, though, they can’t overwhelm him with money.

Under the new collective bargaining agreement, Otani’s earning capability will be severely limited if he does make the jump this offseason because of the international signing bonus pool.

The pool applies to all players under 25 outside the United States and varies depending on a team’s market size.
