Beckham set to test ankle

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

Odell Beckham Jr. made a quick walk through the Giants’ locker room Wednesday, moving briskly and without the trace of a limp. What comes next is crucial as the Giants hope to get their star receiver on the field for Monday night’s home-opener against the Lions.

The Giants begin preparation for the Lions with Thursday’s practice. Beckham has been dealing with a sprained left ankle after being hit in Cleveland Aug. 21 and has not practiced since then.

“We’ll see tomorrow if he’s out there practicing some and just take it day by day and see what’s going on,’’ Eli Manning said. “I’m not sure.’’

The Giants could barely function on offense in their season-opening 19-3 loss to the Cowboys and clearly missed Beckham.

“There’s no hiding the fact he’s a playmaker,’’ Manning said. “Our best player. It’s pretty obvious. I think everybody knows that. It’s different when he’s on the field, but on there or not, we have to play better than what we did and we can and we will.’’

Starting right tackle Bobby Hart had his right ankle wrapped and wore a walking boot. He said he rolled his ankle on the fifth or sixth play. He made it through the game, but said planting on the ankle was difficult.

Hart said the injury definitely hampered him throughout the game.

“I mean, it’s my ankle, bro,’’ Hart said. “You’re trying to stop people from pushing you and you’re trying to plant on your ankle.’’

If he cannot play in Week 2, the Giants do not have

wonderful options to replace him. They could use veteran D.J. Fluker, but general manager Jerry Reese has said the Giants consider Fluker a guard — though he played tackle his first two seasons with the Chargers. The other option is rookie Chad Wheeler, a natural left tackle.

WR Brandon Marshall, the marquee free-agent signing, did not catch a pass until the final play of the game. That did nothing to help the Giants, but it did extend Marshall’s streak with at least one reception to 160 games in which he has played. That is the secondlongest current streak in the NFL, to Larry Fitzgerald’s 196 consecutive games with at least one reception.

“We had a couple opportunities to get him the ball,’’ Manning said. “Just couldn’t connect on a couple of those plays.’’

Before Sunday, the Giants had won their previous 12 games when allowing fewer than 20 points. The last time the Giants lost when allowing fewer than 20 points was Nov. 16, 2014, a 16-10 loss to the 49ers.
