Marshall MIA with new squad

Odell Beckham Jr. made his much-anticipated return Monday night. Now, the Giants have to wonder when Brandon Marshall will arrive.

Two games into his tenure with the Giants, Marshall still looks like a stranger among his new teammates. After making just one catch for 10 yards in his debut — a meaningless last-minute reception to avoid his first game without a catch since he was a rookie in 2006 — Marshall was again abysmal in Monday night’s 24-10 loss to the Lions, with the free-agent signee making one catch for 17 yards.

Though invisible much of the night, the six-time Pro Bowler stood out with the most glaring error of the game.

With the Giants trailing by a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, Eli Manning threw a perfect pass down the right sideline, but Marshall dropped a ball thrown right between his numbers, missing out on a gain of at least 25 yards, which would have brought the Giants to midfield. Two plays later, Jamal Agnew returned a punt 88 yards for a touchdown, sealing the Lions’ win.

“It just can’t happen. I should’ve made that play,” Marshall said. “We just have to capitalize on our opportunities. If I make that play, it may be a different feeling in this locker room.”

Despite benefiting from Beckham’s presence on the field, Marshall didn’t receive his first target until late in the first half. Manning threw a 6-yard out to the 6-foot-5 receiver, but Marshall was unable to get both of his feet in bounds after catching the ball.

With the Giants driving midway through the third quarter, Manning finally connected with Marshall for a 17-yard pass, but the receiver was stopped at the 1-yard line, and the Giants settled for a field goal.

Manning and Marshall failed to connect on three passes in the fourth quarter, including a deep pass in the end zone, in which Marshall couldn’t beat single coverage.

“I don’t think I’m pressing,” Marshall said. “I actually think I’m doing a good job. It’s a new role for me. I’m in the game and I’m trying to make plays wherever I can.

“I got a few opportunities and I let my team down.”
