Wrist slap for deadly butt-boost injection
An unlicensed cosmetologist took a plea deal Monday for killing a Queens mom with an illegal butt-enhancement injection.
Tamira Mobley, 32, pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault and the unauthorized practice of a profession in exchange for 1¹/3 to four years in prison.
Mobley admitted injecting silicone into the rear end of Tamara Blaine, 22, at a seedy Meatpacking District hotel in July 2013.
Justice Thomas Farber offered Mobley the generous deal in Manhattan Supreme Court over the objection of prosecutors, who wanted no less than 3¹/3 to 10 years for the crime.
Farber said he had credited defense lawyer Fred Sosinsky’s argument that Mobley had used the black-market silicone to plump up her own derriere and wouldn’t have done so if she believed the procedure was deadly.
Blaine, a single mom, lost consciousness after the procedure at the Liberty Inn and appeared to suffer a seizure.
An autopsy determined that silicone had entered her veins, asphyxiating her, officials said.
Mobley, who was running a lucrative side business offering aesthetic procedures at a steep discount, also copped to injuring a second victim in July 2012 with a back-alley treatment.
Assistant District Attorney David Drucker previously said he was “aware of other incidents where she’s caused injury to other people she injected in a similar way.”
In recent years, the cultural obsession with a Kardashian-style backside has led to numerous deaths and injuries as people have sought out procedures at cut-rate prices.
Last July, a Harlem woman was killed by of a botched butt injection, according to police. Latesha Bynum, 31, had a toxic material pumped into her backside at a Gramercy Park office. Less than two weeks later, the mother of two suffered extreme chest pain and called 911. She died at a hospital, officials said.
In June 2015, Kelly Mayhew, 34, died in a Queens basement after a fake surgeon pumped toxic silicone into her rear.
Mobley is due back in court on Nov. 28 but isn’t expected to be sentenced until next year. She will remain free on $100,000 bail.
