Francesa will still leave WFAN

- By HOWIE KUSSOY

It is official. In less than three months, Mike Francesa will bid adieu to WFAN.

Following Craig Carton’s stunning and sudden arrest, suspension and subsequent resignation from the radio station, Francesa left the door ajar to remaining at WFAN beyond his planned exit — telling The Post last week he “would not turn my back on the company if I thought it was in trouble” — but Francesa announced Tuesday that he still intends to leave WFAN when his contract expires Dec. 15, as originally planned.

“Now that the things have settled down, we can announce that I am going back to my original schedule and I’ll be departing on [Dec. 15],” Francesa said on the air. “We’ve gone through that and that is now official. … The station and I have looked through everything and agreed upon. It’s going to come pretty fast.”

Francesa had insisted for months that he would not stay past mid-December, but speculation grew that he would perhaps stick around. That talk reached a fever pitch after Carton’s legal troubles began.

The 63-year-old’s decision to leave means the station will lose two of its biggest stars just a few months apart, and be forced to revamp its two most popular programs.

Carton was arrested this month for his alleged involvement in a $5.6 million ticket Ponzi scheme with an eye toward paying his gambling debts. He has professed his innocence. But his arrest forced management to ask Francesa, who has been with the station since 1987, to reconsider his decision — made two years ago — to leave.

“[Staying on] was not something I was even considering,” Francesa said last week. “The only thing I told the whole place in the last couple of days is I wouldn’t turn my back on the station. I wouldn’t do that.”

On Tuesday, though, he said he was sticking with his original plan.

“The station is comfortable with that [decision] and I am too,” he said.
