Poll-ar opposites in mayor race

- Carl Campanile

As public polls show Republican mayoral candidate Nicole Malliotakis getting slaughtered by Mayor de Blasio, her campaign is circulating an internal survey claiming she’s got a shot.

A Marist/WNBC poll released Tuesday gave de Blasio a 47-point blowout margin (65 percent to 18 percent) over Malliotakis.

But Malliotakis’ campaign pollster, Barry Zeplowitz & Associates, insisted in an internal memo distributed to Republican and Conservative Party leaders on Sept. 14 that the race is much more competitive and she trails by 16 points.

“The race has narrowed significantly since I entered,” Malliotakis told reporters Wednesday.

A copy of the poll obtained by The Post showed de Blasio with 44 percent, Malliotakis 28, independent Bo Dietl 3, Reform Party candidate Sal Albanese 2, and 23 percent undecided.

Political consultant Jerry Skurnik said campaigns typically keep a tight lid on internal polling — unless they’re way behind in public polls or way ahead and worry about supporters getting complacent and not coming out on Election Day.

“They’re afraid that their fundraising money will dry up because of the gap in the public polls. They have to push back against that,” Skurnik said of the Malliotakis campaign.

Malliotakis is trying to raise about $50,000 in additional small contributions to qualify for more than $1 million in public matching funds. She has already raised $492,857, but not from enough small contributors. The Campaign Finance Board will likely determine whether she qualifies for public dollars at a Sept. 28 meeting.
