A Three-Time Perv

Boy, did New Yorkers dodge a bullet when Anthony Weiner first pressed the wrong “send” button on his Twitter feed. That became even more painfully obvious Wednesday when federal prosecutors unveiled new details of the two-time mayoral candidate’s sordid sexting sessions with a 15-year-old girl.

This, as they asked Manhattan federal court Judge Loretta Preska to send Weiner to prison next week for 21 to 27 months — because letting him remain free, as he’s proposed, would be “simply inadequate.”

Yet if he hadn’t mass-tweeted that first errant photo of his aroused underwear shot in 2011, the public might never have known a thing — and he would have entered the 2013 mayoral race as the clear front-runner.

He still ran for mayor that year, only to melt down in the face of an avalanche of news that he hadn’t broken his perverse habit after all.

But even that debacle didn’t stop him: Weiner went on to spend two months exchanging erotic messages on a host of online apps — aware all the while that he was dealing with a young teen.

Prosecutors say it all culminated with three Skype chats in which Weiner “used graphic and obscene language” to persuade the unnamed girl “to display her naked body” and fondle herself, “which she did.” He also described in lurid details, “what he would do to her if she were 18.”

Sick stuff, in other words — especially from someone who, as a congressman, ironically declared in 2007: “The Internet is the predator’s venue of choice today.”

Again, this marked the third time Weiner was caught with his pants down. Twice before, prosecutors note, he initially denied any wrongful conduct, only to be confronted with strong evidence. (This time, he denounced stories of his teen-texting as a hoax.)

Time after time, he sorrowfully confessed his sins, apologized and claimed he had reformed — only to be caught yet again.

Weiner has cost himself his political career and his marriage and made himself the punch line of every late-night TV host and countless headlines.

But his real victims, besides his underage one, are the New Yorkers he claimed to be serving — only to betray their trust. What a waste.
