$30M ‘Games’ coming
Guests can relax in a “Mad Men” lounge before stepping into the role of a “Hunger Games” character at Lionsgate Entertainment City, the $30 million “experiential” attraction coming to Times Square.
As first reported on Wednesday at nypost.com, the owner of the tower at Eighth Avenue and 42nd Street, SJP Properties, has signed a retail lease with Spain’s publicly traded theme-park operator, Parques Reunidos. The Madrid company develops entertainment centers based on movies and TV shows from Hollywood heavyweight Lionsgate.
The 45,000-square-foot, three-level attraction at 11 Times Sq. has set an August 2019 opening date. The lease is signed with Parques Reunidos’ US unit, California-based Palace Entertainment, which runs its US venues including the Miami Seaquarium.
Parques Reunidos operates dozens of amusement parks, water parks and zoos around the world. The $30 million total doesn’t include the 15year lease, which industry sources valued at a starting rent of $7 million a year.
The site will include 13 interactive and virtual-reality features based on Lionsgate productions such as “Divergent” and “Twilight,” the companies said.
The deal is a finishing touch for the Steven J. Pozycki-led SJP. Tenants in the 1.1 millionsquare-foot office tower include Proskauer Rose and Microsoft, but its retail space — including 125 feet of wraparound sidewalk frontage — has been slow to get tied up.
SJP’s partners in the tower are PGIM and Norges Bank.
