Outrage over ‘abort’ judge
Prominent women’srights activists and elected officials are urging the Manhattan Democratic Party to scuttle a sitting judge’s nomination to a prestigious judicial post at its delegates’ convention Sunday — because of an abortion controversy.
Opponents of acting Supreme Court Justice Lori Sattler say she is unfit for elevation to a permanent seat in the court because she allowed evidence of a woman’s abortion to be submitted in a custody case in 2013.
A letter of opposition to Sattler’s nomination was submitted to delegates by Sonia Ossorio, head of the NY chapter of the National Organization for Women.
The letter was co-signed by Public Advocate Letitia James, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Rep. Adriano Espaillat, and Assemblyman Robert Rodriguez.
Also signing the opposition letter were City Council members Margaret Chin, Rosie Mendez and Helen Rosenthal, six Democratic district leaders and activist Allan Roskoff of the Jim Owles Democratic Club.
The Sept. 20 letter accuses Sattler of having a “double standard” and of disrespecting and violating women’s rights in her courtroom.
In 2013, the judge said she had based her decision on the finding that the mom was addicted to pills and alcohol, not that she had an abortion.
