Jets eye season’s first win as Fins drop in

Expectations entering this season were low for the Jets, but that does not mean the players are enjoying losing.

At 0-2, the Jets are desperate to get their first win. Their next chance comes Sunday against the Dolphins in their home opener at MetLife Stadium.

“We’re very anxious,” cornerback Morris Claiborne said. “We’re looking forward to that first one. We’re going to do everything we can this week. I don’t see any reason why this can’t be the week, the home opener, that we get that first W.”

The Jets are coming off a butt-kicking in Oakland, a 45-20 loss to the Raiders in which everything fell apart in the second half. The Dolphins come into the game 1-0 after just getting past the Chargers last week. Miami had its Week 1 game postponed because of Hurricane Irma.

For the Jets, an 0-3 start would be the franchise’s first since 2003. Though some believe the Jets are destined for 0-16 this year and the No. 1 pick in next spring’s draft, the players believe they are much better than that. Looking at the schedule, the next three games, starting with this week, are their best chance to get a win. Following the Dolphins, they have the Jaguars at MetLife Stadium and the Browns in Cleveland.

Rookie safety Jamal Adams said he does not believe he ever has started a season 0-2 in his football life. Adams has been one of the bright spots for the Jets so far, looking like a seasoned veteran and making hustle plays, like his tackle of Marshawn Lynch last week near the goal line.

None of that matters without a win, though.

“Can’t wait,” Adams said, sounding like Bart Scott, about getting that first W. “That’s our goal this week. That’s what we’re shooting for. That’s our goal every week, but things happen. We’ve got to go back to the drawing board and correct it and move forward.”

The Jets’ defense had plenty to clean up from the first two weeks. They have given up more points (66) and more rushing yards (370) than any team in the league.

“We can make tackles better,” coach Todd Bowles said of what needs to improve. “We can wrap up. We can fit our gaps and we will be fine. We can communicate. We can do a lot of things better.”
