Late punt on Wing and no prayer

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

PHILADELPHIA — When the Giants needed a big kick from Brad Wing, the usually reliable punter booted a stinker.

“Just miss-hit it,’’ a glum Wing said.

The line-drive punt came with 13 seconds remaining Sunday in a game tied at 24. It was not tied for long, as Wing opened the door and rookie kicker Jake Elliott closed it with a 61-yard field goal as time expired to give the Eagles a 27-24 victory.

Wing’s punt darted out of bounds on the left sideline, traveling only 28 yards.

“It doesn’t take a football genius to realize how big that play was,’’ Wing said. “It’s tough. It’s the second week in a row I feel like I’m responsible for the loss.

“It sucks, but on the other side I think we’re a pretty good team if I get my s--t together.’’

A day after President Trump’s harsh criticism of NFL players protesting, three Giants players — Olivier Vernon, Landon Collins and Damon Harrison — took a knee during the national anthem, while the rest of the team stood arm-in-arm.

“Ain’t nobody scare me,’’ Vernon said. “I play this game, I’ve been raised the right way. I know what’s right and I know what’s wrong, but ain’t nobody ever gonna scare me. I don’t care if you’re the president or not. You ain’t my president.’’

Vernon was hobbled most of the game and finally went out for good in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury. He said X-rays after the game came back negative.

“Get ready, patch up and go on to the next,’’ Vernon said. “It kind of got worse towards the end of the game.’’ A low moment for the Giants’ offense: On fourth- and-goal from the half-yard line in the second quarter, there was absolutely no push up-front and Orleans Darkwa was stopped for a loss of a yard. A quarterback sneak was the way to go, but Eli Manning is never asked to run that play. Darkwa was forced out in the second half with a back injury.

With Bobby Hart (ankle) unable to play, Justin Pugh again moved from left guard to start at right tackle, with Brent Jones again coming off the bench to start at left guard. The Giants did not allow a sack after giving up eight the f irst two games.
