SHE’S ON THE AIR

- — Michael Starr

M EGYN Kelly kicks off her new show, “Megyn Kelly Today,” Monday at 9 a.m. on NBC. We asked her a few questions.

Will you have cooking segments, bands, etc.?

I never say never to anything, but we’re just launching and figuring out who we are. I think it takes a year, frankly ... to really find your sea legs and figure out who you are. Right now our plan is to offer segments that we find informational and fun and uplifting and ideally empowering and enlightening. I really want it to be something where viewers laugh and have a great time and enjoy their hour with us and at the end of it they say, “You know what? I had an awesome hour and I’ve also been given tools that I think can help me in various areas of my life. Megyn and I are going to try them together.”

How different is it working in front of a live audience?

I marvel at how singers can go into a football stadium and sing the national anthem in front of 60,000 people. That is so terrifying to me. It’s just a different animal, different than [moderating] a presidential debate in front of 25 million people. In rehearsals, once I get going and relax a little .... it’s energizing, exciting. [The studio audience] adds an exciting element where you don’t get bored — you’re involving them and asking them lots of questions It’s interactive, fun and dynamic.

The morning TV audience is also in a different mindset

I need to earn my way forward with this audience and I’m ready to do that. I want to get to know them better and I hope they want to get to know me better. It’s part of the nature of morning TV that I think is more revealing — it’s a little more intimate, and that’s good. It’s what I believe we’re on this Earth for ... and it’s very consistent with who I am as a person and a woman in this world.
