Gallman brings running game to life

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

TAMPA, Fla. — If the Giants had won, what Wayne Gallman did in his NFL debut would have been a big deal.

The rookie running back put some life (11 carries for 42 yards) in the rushing attack and scored on a 4-yard pass from Eli Manning, the first NFL touchdown for Gallman in Sunday’s 25-23 loss to the Buccaneers.

“When I went out there, it was kinda surreal but I just made sure I calmed down and made sure I knew what I was doing,’’ Gallman said.

A fourth-round draft pick from Clemson, Gallman had been inactive the first three weeks. With Orleans Darkwa (back) out and Paul Perkins ineffective again before he was forced out with an injury to his ribs, Gallman made the most of his first opportunity and his touchdown late in the third quarter gave the Giants a 17-16 lead.

“It’s what I dreamed about my whole life,’’ Gallman said. “Ever since I got here on the Giants, I’ve been waiting to play so bad. From the first game all the way to this game, and to get that action, I’m ready for what’s coming.’’

D.J. Fluker received his first action with the Giants, starting at right guard. John Jerry made his first NFL start at left guard and Brett Jones filled in at center when Weston Richburg went out with a concussion. The Giants did not allow a sack for the second consecutive game.

“It was musical chairs,’’ right tackle Justin Pugh said. “What else could have gone wrong for the offensive line? For all those guys to step up and play well, I’m just proud of our group.’’

On a 2-yard TD pass to TE Rhett Ellison, the Giants had DE Kerry Wynn in the backfield as a pass protector. ... Pugh hobbled off and was replaced for two snaps in the second quarter by rookie Chad Wheeler. … As promised, Andre Adams split time at free safety with Darian Thompson, who has struggled. Thompson did not help his cause when he whiffed on what became a 36-yard run for Jacquizz Rodgers.
