HARVEY'S NYPD BLUES
Seth: It was a joke, but I really meant it
Comedian Seth MacFarlane revealed Wednesday that he ripped Harvey Weinstein at a 2013 Oscars event out of anger after learning the movie mogul allegedly had preyed on his pal Jessica Barth.
MacFarlane, who also hosted the main Oscars ceremony that year, said, “Congratulations, you five ladies no longer have to pretend to be attracted to Harvey Weinstein,” as he announced the five Supporting Actress nominees.
The 4-year-old quip has resurfaced amid a slew of sex-assault and harassment allegations against Weinstein, leading MacFarlane to issue a statement on Twitter Wednesday, where he insisted the joke came “from a place of loathing and anger” at Weinstein.
The “Ted” writer-director says the 2011 film’s co-star Barth had confided to him that she’d been harassed by Weinstein and “it was with this account in mind that . . . I couldn’t resist the opportunity to take a hard swing in [Weinstein’s] direction.”
